The previous post was the introduction to this series of posts, and I also commented a couple of ideas about the amount of materials you have to prepare for a class and how to use slides. This post deals with the preparation of the lessons and the planification of a course . Here I go:

Always prepare your lessons, even if you have been teaching the course for years. Some lessons are particularly complicated and you need a full understanding of the main concepts, or maybe you could try new ways of explaining those ideas. Other lessons just need a brief recap, but you also have to do that. And this also applies to lab exercises. To sum up: never wing it (or, well, it’s not you, it’s me: I can’t wing it 🙂 )

I always solve the lab exercises and the exams before passing them to the students:

Not preparing the lab exercises may lead to things not working when you finally have the lab session, and you cannot always solve the problem on the fly (even with a thorough preparation, do not forget that Murphy is a pro and something will fail with probability close to 1). If there is some change on the software or the hardware between academic years, it is a good idea to repeat the lab exercises again, just to check if the change has an effect on your solved exercises (of course, it will have an effect 😉 ).

If you do not solve the exam before (either quiz or problem based), there are two possible unpleasant outcomes: that a mistake in the exam prevents the students from solving it, or that the exam takes more time than it should be desirable. Apart from measuring the time it takes me to solve the exam, I leave it “sleeping” for a few days and then solve it again, as a double check.

Although you do not make it public because you may want to do some last minute changes, you should keep a day to day planning of your course, that will be updated each term. That is, the first year you teach a course you prepare an estimated planning for each day of class; at the end of every class, you jot down if you have fulfilled your estimation for that day: maybe you run short of time for your explanations, or if there was some kind of time consuming incidence (for example, that the official satisfaction surveys for that year are passed in your class). In the following years use those annotations of the previous year as a reference, and add the new modifications. As you can see in the picture, my schedule is paper based (I am a luddite computer scientist 🙂 ): I print a Google calender of the months of the semester, mark all the holidays, and for each day of class I divide every box into two: I copy my notes from the previous years above, and after each class I write down the new incidences below.

Next day we will talk about lectures.
