No sé cómo sobreviví ;).

After the two previous entries (the introduction and the preparation of lectures), today I will focus on the lecturing itself. Hey-ho, let’s go:

The logistics of the course should be ready and explained in the first day of class. For those students that cannot attend, it should be available in the web platform of the course (they must understand that you cannot repeat the class again). Therefore, in that first day of class your students should know the deadlines of the deliverables you ask, so they can organize their work and take full responsability of it, which is an essential skill in order to enroll the job market.

For me, teaching is like being an actress (well, sort of, being a real actress is a gift): you have to keep the interest of the class, know which are the most complicated points of the lecture and emphasize them, and which are the most boring parts and combine them with other type of materials that cheer up the pace of the lecture. And acting during two hours is exhausting, that’s why you finish the lecture overtired and your voice suffers a lot, especially in the first days of the semester. I had six lecture hours every Thursday in my first semester as a teacher, and still today I recall it: from 8:00 to 10:00, then from 10:30 to 12:00 and from 12:00 to 14:00. I do not understand now how I made it 😉 In lab sessions you have to move from computer to computer answering doubts, so to all the above you have to add the kilometers you may travel (just take a pedometer to the lab sessions and you will see :))

The first weeks of the semester are awkward: you still do not know your students, and they do not know you either (your teaching style, your sense of humor…). No matter how many years you have been teaching, you always will be nervous in the first days of each semester. In my opinion that is a good thing: it means that you do not lose respect for the teaching craft. Speaking of nerves: teachers usually have recurrent professional nightmares 🙂 I have two: the first one is that my class goes completely out of control and the students behave like the evil gremlins 🙂 , and the other one is that I have to attend an exam but I run and I run and never reach the exam room. Maybe I have gone completely bananas (we cannot discard that possibility), but I have discussed this with other colleagues and they also experience it. Just a coincidence 🙂 ?

Each group of students you teach is completely unique: they differ in their skills levels, attitude and even in their internal dynamics (groups of friends, more or less number of repeater students…). You should watch those dynamics, take advantage of the good ones (participation in the class, interest in the subject…) and cut from the very beginning the negative ones, especially if affect to the whole class (for example, flames in the class forum).

Next week -it will be the last in the series, I promise 🙂 – I will talk about some final considerations.
