Audioslave<\/a>\u00a0(\u00a1thanks!) I start a series of posts in order to tell my own experience after 16 years teaching in different Bachelor and Master programs that include subjects belonging to my area, which is Systems Engineering and Automation.<\/p>\nI have thought a lot about publishing this because in a certain way it is embarrassing for me: I am not lecturing (nice joke there) anyone. What I am telling here is what I try to do as a teacher, but no one is perfect and my students are the perfect witnesses of that. My only goal is to put down some tricks that would have be great to know when I began teaching.<\/p>\n
I have learnt many of these things via trial-and-error<\/em>, or properly speaking, trial-pain-and-error<\/em>, that is, making mistakes and having hard times. When I began to teach, they assigned me the subjects, the syllabuses, some materials (I am so lucky to have nice workmates) and hey, let’s the chalk games begin. Luckily, things have changed a lot, and now you can find a lot of teaching training courses that helps you to prepare your lessons, and some of those courses are specifically aimed to junior teachers.<\/p>\nIf I could give only one piece of advice to my x-16 years self, I would say this: teaching takes time, waaaaaaay more time than you think. And this means that, at least in the Spanish University, you will have to massively juggle in order to avoid that teaching becomes your professional suicide and get punished for not doing research. But that day when you see your students are really enjoying a lab session, or when they finally understand a concept that was difficult to grasp, you will see that it was all worth it.<\/p>\n
Anyway, since today is the first day of class, I mean, the first post \ud83d\ude09 , without much ado, here you have two things I have learnt about the amount of materials you need for your classes:<\/p>\n
\n- Always have more materials for your classes than you think you are going to need, especially when the course is a new one and\/or you do not have many teaching experience: it’s better to overstimate than to understimate. If you use slides for your lessons you will see how those fracking things fly, so don’t get too confident.<\/li>\n
- Now that we talk about slides… are they heaven or hell? Well, I use them now a lot, but cautionarily. I do not follow a text book in my courses, so slides must be the basis for the students work at home. But in my classes I try to mix them, if possible, with videos, practical exercises (that students should try to solve on the fly before I do), and programming exercises. That is, activities that break the monotony of the lecturing, because two hours of talking bores them (and you and anyone else).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
