Con tres a\u00f1illos ped\u00ed mi primer juguete a los Reyes: un cami\u00f3n con bombonitas de butano. Y eso me trajeron los Reyes. Cuando lleg\u00f3 el momento de escoger la carrera mis padres me dieron total libertad, y me decid\u00ed por Ingenier\u00eda Inform\u00e1tica.\u00a0Durante la carrera \u00e9ramos pocas chicas en clase, y alguna vez he sido la \u00fanica. Nunca he tenido problema con eso.<\/p>\n<p>Hasta hace poco pensaba que eso era lo normal, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que ya ha pasado bastante tiempo (enorme suspiro) desde que empec\u00e9 la carrera. Pero har\u00e1 cosa de un par de a\u00f1os escuch\u00e9 (curiosamente a un par de mujeres) preocuparse por si unos juguetes &#8220;no eran de ni\u00f1a&#8221;. Y ah\u00ed me entr\u00f3 un poco de yuyu al pensar que, desgraciadamente, todav\u00eda una cr\u00eda del siglo XXI puede escuchar en su casa que no puede jugar con cosas porque son de ni\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00ed que si por un casual alguna chiquilla me lee, me gustar\u00eda contarle dos cosas que he aprendido:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No dejes que nadie te diga lo que puedes o no puedes hacer porque eres ni\u00f1a. Si quieres ser una princesa, s\u00e9 una princesa. Si quieres ser ingeniera, s\u00e9 una ingeniera. Pero hazlo porque es lo que de verdad te gusta, y no porque alguien te diga que puedes hacerlo o no.<\/li>\n<li>Esto es quiz\u00e1s m\u00e1s importante: decidas lo que decidas sobre tu futuro, hazlo a tu manera. No hay una \u00fanica forma de &#8220;ser algo&#8221;. Puedes ser ingeniera y llevar tacones, si te gustan. Puedes ser abogada y llevar camisetas frikis, si te gustan. Puedes ser lo que te d\u00e9 la gana y como t\u00fa quieras. Y posiblemente, con el paso del tiempo, cambiar\u00e1s tus gustos. Yo de peque\u00f1a odiaba el rosa, los vestidos, las mo\u00f1as, me encantaba el f\u00fatbol y llevaba el pelo corto. Unos cuantos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s me encantan el rosa y los vestidos, sigo odiando las mo\u00f1as, el f\u00fatbol me gusta pero menos, y a\u00fan llevo el pelo corto.\u00a0 Y seguro que cambiar\u00e9 m\u00e1s cosas, y estar\u00e1 genial \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"english\"><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"#spanish\">[En espa\u00f1ol]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have the most wonderful parents, who never told me what I could do or could not because I was a girl. The first toy I asked for at Christmas when I was three years old was a little toy truck full of little butane canisters. And exactly that was what I got. When the moment came to go to college, my parents told me to choose my bachelor freely, so I decided on Computer Engineering. We were just a few girls at class, and sometimes I was the only girl. It never troubled me.<\/p>\n<p>Until recently I thought that was the rule, especially taking into account that it has been a while (massive sigh) since I went to college. But about two years ago I listened by chance to some people (funnily, they were women) worrying about some &#8220;not for girls&#8221; toys. And that gave me the heebie-jeebies, because it meant that, unfortunately, still in the XXI century some girls will be taught at home that they can&#8217;t play with some toys because they are made for boys.<\/p>\n<p>So in case that some girl reads this post, I would like to tell her two things I have learnt:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t let that anybody tells you what you can or you can&#8217;t do just because you are a girl. If you want to be a princess, be a princess. If you want to be an engineer, be an engineer. But do it because it is what you really want, not because someone has told you that you are allowed (or not) to.<\/li>\n<li>This is perhaps yet more important: whatever you decide about your future, do it your own way. There is not an only way to &#8220;be something&#8221;. You can be an engineer and wear high heels, if you like. You can be an attorney and wear geek t-shirts, if you like. You can be whatever you want and however you want. And possibly, over time, you will change your mind. When I was a girl I hated pink, dresses, bows, I loved football and I had very short hair. A few years later I love pink and dresses, still hate bows, I like football but not as much as before, and I have not so short hair.
